The Best Choice for Wooden Kitchen Flooring

We’ve had many customers ask whether it's a good idea to fit engineered wooden floors in their kitchen, with concerns about the impact of temperate changes, water, and everyday wear and tear. The good news is that if you choose a reputable floor fitter and a high quality engineered hardwood floor, then you can opt for a wooden floor in your kitchen.

Engineered wooden kitchen floors make a real design statement and can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of traditional solid hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed with a hardwood or plywood core that is between three, to twelve layers thick. The layers are then compressed together to form a robust, durable flooring solution. When compared to solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring for the kitchen has the advantage of being more resistant to moisture, which is a key consideration.

Engineered hardwood floors are available in a range of widths ranging from three to seven inches, as well as a range of thicknesses varying between 3/8’s to 3/4’s of an inch.

Additionally, they are available in a variety of domestic and exotic hardwood species. There are two methods by which engineered wooden floors are made.

The first method is the ‘sliced' or ‘sawn cut’ method, where the top surface wear layer of the wood is removed, resulting in a more natural appearance and a finer grain. This form of cut has the ability to accommodate a thicker wear layer.

The second type of cut is the ‘rotary cut’, where the veneer hardwood wear layer is peeled-off the log by means of a large lathe. This is the most common method, but the peeling can result in graining that is less uniform.

There are many elements to consider when installing or refitting wooden kitchen flooring, from the cabinets and worktops that sit on top of your floor, to matting and fixtures, but an engineered wooden floor in your kitchen is guaranteed to turn heads and put a smile on your face whenever you enter your kitchen.
